Band members discuss their favorite albums on new, influential music blog The Sound, It Resounds

 

MONTREAL, QC - February 21, 2011 – The Sound, It Resounds, a new and influential music blog, today announced the launch of its audio interview series, including conversations with members of Grammy Award winners Arcade Fire, Braids and Efterklang. These engaging interviews reveal band members’ favorite albums and how these seminal recordings influenced and inspired their own art.

The goal of The Sound, It Resounds is simple: Tell great, enlightening, personal and entertaining stories of the who, what, where, why and how’s of the music that helped shaped their lives.  The blog format also features both essay or short stories on a wide variety of classic albums as well as one-on-one audio podcast  interviews conducted by host and curator of The Sound, It Resounds, Gary Jansz.

More notably there are stories written by the likes of producer Howard Bilerman (Arcade Fire/Wolf Parade/godspeed, you black emperor) on the Velvet Underground, Stephen Ramsay of Young Galaxy contributes a story on Public Enemy and Liz Powell of Land of Talk gives a shout out to Fugazi.  

The blogs recent format change to audio interviews features the likes of Katie Lee of Braids, Tim Kingsbury of Arcade Fire and Casper Clausen of Danish group Efterklang all talking about influential albums that have inspired their art. We all have albums that define a personal point in time, sometime framing certain moments as the perfect soundtrack to actions and events that transpire. But it’s the rare album that continues to unknowingly and seamlessly frame new moments and events over the course of time, perhaps giving new meaning and context. This week Young Galaxy's Stephen Ramsay defines 'his' punk rock via a hip-hop classic

Punk rock, much like indie rock, has long out-grown its mere musical definition. It exists as a catch-all phrase that has somehow miraculously survived several points of dilution over the years. That said, when one uses the term punk rock, there is an undeniable and understood inference: it's a fierce, intransigent form of communication that speaks volumes of the frustration (and of course much more)  we face daily. With that in mind, Stephen Ramsay's excellent story,  likening Public Enemy's hip hop debut classic as 'his punk rock,' not only makes sense, but is wholly accurate to punk's broad definition. This week filmmaker, writer Matt Bissonnette on weird, mythical worlds and an enduring classic from The Band

This weeks story is our first from a filmmaker and writer.  I'm so happy to have Matt Bissonnette share his thoughts and feelings on a seemingly indestructible and mythical house that the Band built. Music From Big Pink,  is not only the structure that literally gave birth to the Band's 1968 debut album, but it could also be seen as the metaphoric, unique structure they built and continued to build upon until their demise in 1977.  Music From Big Pink had a rural, idyllic, Americana lyricism floating throughout every tune that was, in many ways,  completely at odds with the hippy psychedelia of 1968.  Yet it was most likely the romantic yearning of the prose and working man hymnals that resonated with many hippies, freaks, civil rights activists and radicalized students on North American campuses. Thankfully, in 2010, it hasn't lost any of its enduring resonance.

This week's story is our first contribution from a performer/artist/and extraordinary musician, Elizabeth Powell of Land of Talk.  I remember hearing Liz for the first time back around 2004 on a cassette only release featuring only stark guitar and plaintive, hushed vocals that stood the neck hair's on end.  Not surprisingly, Liz's take on Fugazi's incendiary In on the Kill Taker is not only a poetically infused personal missive to a punk rock classic, but also illustrates the equal strands of poetry and fury that make up her music.

New this week - Howard Bilerman discusses a flawed, yet essential live album gem

I am extremely happy to have world renown sound engineer, producer, musician and human being extraordinaire Howard Bilerman contributing to The Sound, It Resounds this week. Live albums play a particularly interesting, yet sometimes marginalized,  role in an artists discography.  Often quickly dated, hastily recorded, and reeking of major label cash-in, the live album can sometimes get a bad wrap. Howard gives a great account of why the Velvet Underground's classic 'Live at Max's Kansas City' matters more than most live albums and how it can point to making timeless art: live or in the studio.
